Georgian Airways will start making direct flights to Sochi for the Winter Olympic Games from February 4. Georgians flying to Russian cities have been making transfers since 2010. Russia and Georgia halted direct air links 7 years ago.
Airzena.com reported that the flights will be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Georgians will reach the Olympics in just an hour for 159 euro. The flight service will be available until May 1.
Zurab Abashize, Special Envoy of the Georgian Prime Minister for Relations with Russia, told Vestnik Kavkaza that all obstacles for flights between the two countries created after the 2008 war had been removed. He noted that both states were ready to make the flights. Abashizdze added that there were Russian companies interested in using the Batumi and Poti Ports to export products, including petroleum. Railways were another option, he concluded.
