IAEA concerned with silence of Ukrainian nuclear scientists

The IAEA has not received a request from the Ukrainian authorities to help with ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities, the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said today.

"With regard to nuclear safety in Ukraine, it is the responsibility of the national authorities to ensure the maximum level of security. We are not aware of formal requests made by Ukraine to participate in the process of monitoring and ensuring security at nuclear facilities," RIA Novosti quotes Amano as saying.

Previously, experts have expressed concerns about the plans of the Ukrainian authorities to use the U.S. manufactured fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
