Oil extraction at Kazakhstan’s Kashagan will not start before late 2015

Kazakh Minister for Oil and Gas Uzakbay Karabalin said that oil extraction at Kashagan will not start before the end of 2015. Kazakhstan is forming torosses on a 500km section. The minister noted that there was high density of hydrogen sulphide and pressure at the field. He added that the zone was under environmental protection and thus operations in the area had restrictions.

Eduard Poletayev, a Kazakh expert, told Vestnik Kavkaza that development of oil extraction was going slowly because of technical difficulties. He reminded that the environment aggravated corrosion processes and the shallow-waters in which the platforms were built were frozen in winter.

The expert believes that it is better to spend extra time to realize the project more effectively. Poletayev emphasized that the Caspian Sea was a unique water body and the government was paying special attention to environmental safety.

The analyst does not consider it a failed project. He rules out shutting down the project, because the West has already invested large sums of money in it.
