Iran could become a new participant in the Eurasian Economic Union. Experts came to such a conclusion after the negotiations between the president of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, and of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The two heads of state discussed prospects of cooperation between the Customs Union and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Tehran submitted the application for accession to the SCO a long time ago. However, because of the international pressure, at the initiative of Kazakhstan a decision was made not to give membership of the SCO to a country which is under international sanctions. But Kazakhstan put in a lot of effort to advance the international negotiations on the nuclear program of Iran a little later. After that the situation started changing, and as the head of the service of strategic planning of the Association of Border Cooperation, Alexander Sobyanin, told "Vestnik Kavkaza", the entry of Iran into the SCO is an issue de facto resolved – today neither Russia, nor China, nor anyone else would object.
