Nuclear power plant in Akkuyu to save Turkey 10% of funds spent on energy carriers

Akkuyu nuclear power plant Director Fuad Akhundov said that the facility built in the Mersin Province will save the country 10% of funds spent on energy carriers, RIA Novosti reports.

Uranium for production of 35 billion KW/h at Akkuyu will cost about $500 million, compared with $3.5 billion spent on gas to produce the same amount of power. Rosatom guarantees the safety of the facility.

Turkey imports about 50 billion cubic meters of gas, about half of the volume is used for power production. Turkey imported energy carriers for $56 billion in 2013 and $239 billion in the past 5 years. According to the Turkish Central Bank, the deficit of the payment balance totaled $45.7 billion in October. Nuclear energy will help save 7 times more money spent on energy production.
