Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said in Tehran that the Islamic Republic could reduce gas supplies to Europe and the whole world if sanctions continue. Azerbaijani oil expert Seymur Aliyev said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza that Iran’s threats seemed irrational because Iran was not supplying Europe with gas or oil, making Khamenei’s statement irrelevant.
Iran can use the infrastructure Azerbaijan is building (Southern Gas Corridor) to deliver gas to Europe, explains the expert. The Southern Gas Corridor consists of the South-Caucasus Gas Pipeline, TANAP and TAP. Iran could use the Corridor to transport gas to Europe through Baku.
Seymur Aliyev said that most gas extracted in Iran was used by the republic itself, some was exported to Turkey. The northern part of Iran uses gas supplies sold by Turkmenistan.
The expert assumes that the threats were made to affect oil prices some way. Moreover, he goes on, any reduction of oil and gas exports would harm Iran itself. Gas contracts are usually made for 20-25 years, any breach would mean an arbitrary process.
Overall, Seymur Aliyev considers Iran’s threats unrealistic.
