Protesters in Tbilisi demand that government resign

A protest demonstration was held in Tbilisi today, calling for the resignation of the Georgian government due to the sharp depreciation of the national currency, the lari.

The rally took place at the Tbilisi Marriot hotel, where Georgian Finance Minister Nodar Khaduri and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Giorgi Kvirikashvili met with the representatives of the private sector of the Georgian economy.

"We call for the resignation of these ministers and the government as a whole. The country faces an acute economic crisis due to them," News-Georgia cited a representative of 'Fair Generation', Girshel Bartya.

The lari rate has been declining against the US dollar since November 20, 2014. As for recent trading, it was set at 2.2619 lari/$1.

The lari rate was within 1.74-1.76 lari/$1 until January 20, 2014.

The National Bank of Georgia began to tighten monetary policy in February in connection with the expected rise in prices due to the depreciation of the national currency.
