Bulgarian President says Southern gas corridor is of strategic importance for EU

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said at the 3rd Baku Global Shared Societies Forum that the Southern Gas Corridor is of strategic importance for the EU and especially for Bulgaria and South East Europe.

President Rosen Plevneliev said at the 3rd Baku Global Shared Societies Forum in Baku that the Southern Gas Corridor is of strategic importance for the EU and especially for Bulgaria and South East Europe.“We are very grateful [to Azerbaijan] for this visionary project,” Trend cited him as saying.The president noted that implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor will reduce the dependence of Europe on one gas supplier. According to him, Bulgaria will build its interconnector to the TAP gas pipeline, which will transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe. So Bulgaria will get gas from Azerbaijan, Plevneliev said.“We have a contract about buying more than one billion cubic meters of gas per year from SOCAR. We want to activate this contract as soon as possible,” he said.The president described the purchase of Azerbaijani gas as a part of Bulgaria’s national security policy. “If you have more than one source of energy, then you can sleep tight,” Plevneliev said.
