Azerbaijan, Ukraine to improve cooperation in energy sphere

Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych and Azerbaijani President Ilkham
Aliyev will promote bilateral cooperation in the energy sphere,
Yanukovych said at the opening of the second session of the Council of
Presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan in Kiev, ITAR-TASS reports.


Yanukovych told Aliyev that Ukraine considers Azerbaijan a reliable
partner and friend and emphasized its important position in the
Caspian region.


Aliyev expressed satisfaction with the way cooperation in fuel and
energy sphere affects the growth of trade turnover. He emphasized that
cooperation in the Caspian and Black Sea areas is impossible without
cooperation of Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

On October 7, after the 8th session of the joint inter-governmental
Ukrainian-Azerbaijani commission for economic cooperation, First
Deputy Ukrainian Premier Andrey Kluyev told journalists that the two
countries will sign a plan for strategic partnership for 2011-2015.
The plan includes cooperation in military engineering, space,
transport, heavy machinery engineering, fuel and energy complexes,
agriculture, education and science and other spheres. The sides plan
to agree on increase of oil supplies to Ukraine from the Caspian
region.


Before visiting Kiev, Aliyev gave an interview to Ukrainian media. He
said that Azerbaijan is ready to cooperate with Ukraine in the
liquefied gas sphere. Aliyev expressed confidence that Azerbaijan will
manage to achieve a gas extraction level of 40-50 billion cubic meters
annually if they sign contract.


Ukraine plans to build its own liquefied gas terminal on the Black Sea
coast to be less dependant on Russian gas, Azerbaijan was invited to
take part in the project.
