Russia and Turkmenistan to improve ferry services in Caspian Sea

Turkmenistan and Russia, who share a Caspian Sea border, have signed
an inter-governmental document on organizing railroad and ferry
services between the ports of the two countries, Trend reports, citing
an official Turkmenistan source.

The document was signed in Ashkhabad at a session of a joint
inter-government commission for economic cooperation.

The document had been prepared since 2008. It provides direct links
between the Russian ports Olya in Astrakhan and Makhachkala and the
port of Turkmenbasha. The route provides for an increase of cargo
transport from Turkmenistan to Russia, Georgia, Ukraine and Belarus.

The president of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, said at a
government council that he supports the increase of railroad and naval
cargo transport in the region, including the use of new routes.
