Georgia to label genetically modified products

From January 1, 2011 importers to Georgia will need to label food
products, Business Georgia reports. Although Georgia joined the
Kartakhen protocol it does not yet label genetically modified
products. Agricultural expert Paata Koguashvili said that the
initiative will protect consumer rights.

The world produces large amounts of genetically modified products,
mainly tomatoes and potatoes. The USA produces genetically modified
soybean, rice and wheat, exported to various countries.

83% of Georgians are against genetically modified products, opinion polls say.
