Aaccording to expert estimates, there are up to 3.5 million illegal migrants in Russia at the moment, the first deputy director of the Federal Migration Service (FMS) of Russia, Mikhail Tyurkin, told journalists, Prime-Tass reports.
"In comparison with 2001 it is three times less - then it was about 10 million; this trend is good news," he added.
According to Tyurkin, Russia has all the conditions to ensure that migrants can legally stay in the country and engage in labor activity. "Russia today cannot manage without migrant workers in certain sectors of the economy," Tyurkin said, “but foreigners must work only in areas needed by Russia, without impairing the rights of our citizens.”
