Belarus pays off debt to Azerbaijan

Belarus has paid off its state debt to Azerbaijan, one that it used to
pay Gazprom. The debt was to be paid on July 5th but Belarus decided
to pay early, Interfax reports.

On June 16th, Russia gave Belarus five days to pay its debt for
Russian gas. At the same time Gazprom started reducing gas supplies
proportionally to the size of the debt.

Belarus then declared that Russia has a debt for gas transit, reducing
the amount of gas transited proportionally to the size of the debt.
Belarus asked Azerbaijan to provide a $200 million loan for 12 days.
Belarus paid $190 million to Russia, Russia paid $228 million and
still owes Belarus $30 million more.
