The Austrian authorities plan to sign an agreement with Russia about Austria's participation in the South Stream gas pipeline project. The agreement is due to be signed on April 24 in Vienna. The project is expected to be valid for 30 years. After its signing, it will go for ratification to the Austrian parliament.
It is partly due to Moscow's former conflicts with Kiev that Russia is trying to build alternative export routes. South Stream will pass from Novorossiysk under the Black Sea, carrying 2.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per year through Bulgaria through two branch lines to Europe. Although the route has not been confirmed yet, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Greece have already joined the project. South Stream is scheduled to be put into operation
in 2015.
Austria also supports the Nabucco gas pipeline project, aimed at supplying Europe with non-Russian gas.
