The position of Russia on Tehran’s nuclear program is neither
pro-American, nor pro-Iranian, Russian Presidential Assistant Sergey
Prikhodko said today, commenting on the critical declaration made by
Mahmudinejad on the possibility of supporting UN SC sanctions by
Russia, Iran News reports.
Prikhodko noted that any unpredictability, political extremism,
non-transparency and inconsistency in making decisions concerning the
international community are unacceptable to Russia.
He said that Russia will promote good and respectful relations with
absolutely all its neighbors. Russia is for promoting equality, rule
of law, mutual respect and equal security for all.
On May 17th Iran reached an agreement with Turkey and Brazil on
uranium exchange. According to the document, Iran will send 1.2 tons
of low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for 120 kg of 20%
enriched uranium.
On May 18th US State Secretary Hillary Clinton declared that
Washington, Moscow and Beijing agreed on the new UN Security Council
resolution on Iran.
At the moment the ‘Six’ mediators on Tehran’s nuclear program
settlement are discussing the resolution project on additional
sanctions against Iran, which has been developed by the US side.
The ‘Six’ had previously failed to come to an agreement on the US
proposal. Iran's nuclear program became more of an issue after Iranian
President Mahmud Ahmadinejad said that Tehran had produced the first
batch of 20%-enriched uranium and has the potential to produce even
more highly-enriched uranium.
Prikhodko also spoke of plans to triple low-enriched uranium
production and rejected accusations of involvement in Iranian nuclear
arms development.
