The port of Sochi has started constructing a passenger terminal,
putting a stop to foreign cargo reception, RIA Novosti reports, citing
the Russian deputy minister of transport, Victor Olerskiy.
Cargo reception will still be carried out in the ports of Tuaps,
Gelendjik and Novorossiysk. There will be additional alternative ports
in the autumn. Olerskiy said that the port Caucasus is constructing a
terminal for horizontal loading-unloading. There will be a
transport-logistic center built next to the terminal.
Most of the cargo needed for Olympic construction in Sochi is being
transported by rail. Foreign construction materials, equipment, small
cargo items and inert cargo is transported via water. The port on the
river Mzymta will be ready to receive such cargo.
The deputy minister noted that despite the storm in 2009, which
destroyed part of the tide-barrier, the port is receiving ‘Olympic’
cargo. The force 7 storm hit Mzymta on 14th December 2009. The Irben
platform sank, all people were rescued. The damage to the port was due
to the port's unpreparedness.
