Chechnya celebrates Language Day

The Day of the Chechen language, one of the newest Chechen holidays, is being celebrated in the republic today, reports RIA Novosti with reference to a Presidential Administration spokesman.

The Day of the Chechen language was established by decree of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov in 2007, in order to popularise the Chechen language.

The holiday coincides with the anniversary of the first publication in 1923 of "Serlo"(Light), the first newspaper in the Chechen language. Kadyrov said earlier that any undertakings aimed at the development and popularisation of the Chechen language would receive his full support.

"The event will be held at the State Theatre and Concert Hall. All the participants including the president will be dressed in national costume" the spokesman said.

Preparations for the holiday started a month ago in Chechnya.
