Bastrykin appointed chairman of newly created Investigation Committee

President Dmitry Medvedev appointed today Alexander Bastrykin chairman
of the Investigative Committee at the Prosecutor's Office of Russia,
the Kremlin press service reports.

Bastrykin previously headed the Investigative Committee at the
Prosecutor's Office (ICPO), which was converted to the Investigation
Committee last year.

In December 2010, Medvedev signed a bill on the establishment of the
Investigation Committee, which became an independent structure
separated from the Prosecutor's Office.

According to the bill, the IC is aimed at investigation the most
complicated crimes, which previously had been investigated by the
Investigation Committee at the Prosecutor's Office, Interior Ministry,
the FSB and the Federal Service for Drug Control.
