Lithuania prepares resolution project on Nagorno-Karabakh

Approval of the resolution on a peaceful settlement of
Nagorno-Karabakh that has been developed by Lithuania will depend on
efforts of the international community on resolving the conflict,
Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Irena Degutiene said, Trend reports.

The resolution proposes to stop supporting the status quo, which had
been achieved by force rather than by international law, she said
before visiting Baku in February.

According to Degutiene, the resolution promotes the participation of
the European Union in a Nagorno-Karabakh settlement. She believes that
real efforts on the issue will be seen in 2011. Lithuania chairs the
OSCE this year.

Degutiene will visit Baku on February 8-9. She believes that the visit
will strengthen ties between Azerbaijan and Lithuania. The sides will
exchange views on modern geopolitical processes within the system of
European security and the South Caucasus.

The speaker said that another topic for discussion is Azerbaijan’s
Euro-integration.

Azerbaijan and the EU signed an energy deal in mid-January during the
visit  to Baku of the President of the European Commission, Jose
Manuel Barroso. According to the document, Azerbaijan will provide gas
supplies to the EU on a long-term basis, while Europe provides the
market. The deal is an important step towards the Southern Gas
Corridor project.

Degutiene plans to improve the possibilities of Lithuanian business in
Azerbaijan. She noted that the Azerbaijani economy is one of the
fastest developing economies in the world. Azerbaijani businessmen
will also be explained the benefits of investing in Lithuania and its
projects.
