Armenia celebrates National Army Day on Friday, News Armenia reports.
The celebrations started with a Holy Liturgy at the Holy Echmiadzin
and Welfare Prayers in churches near military bases.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan gave awards to servicemen. The
Defense Ministry had a session where a group of officers and soldiers
received state and ministry awards.
The State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Spendiaryan
will have a special concert.
Armenian armed forces were established on January 28, 1992, when the
Defense Ministry was organized and the minister made his first order.
The Armenian High Council established a special regiment within the
structure of the Interior Ministry in 1990. It consisted of 26
companies formed in Yerevan and districts of Armenia. A defense
committee was organized on May 4, 1991.
Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said that the national army is
concluding its second decade as one of the most prepared armies in the
region, with modern arms and equipment, high professionalism,
readiness for new achievements.
