US president ratifies START

US President Barak Obama has signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) on Wednesday, AP reports.


RIA Novosti was informed that the signing was planned on Wednesday.


AP reported that the US State Secretary Hillary Clinton, Defense Minister Robert Gates, Senators John Kerry and Richard Lugar were at the signing process.


The Russian Federal Council approved the START document signed by Russia and the USA in Prague on April 8, 2010. The US Senate ratified the document in late December 2010. Moscow and Washington will reduce the quantity of nuclear warheads to 1,550, by a third compared with the deal signed in Moscow in 2002, and reduce strategic carriers to 800.


Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the ratification document on January 28.


The US State Secretary Hillary Clinton and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov are expected to exchange ratification instruments in Munich on February 5.
