Leader of Kabardino-Balkaria asked to protect relatives of militants

Valery Khatazhukov, head of the human rights center in
Kabardino-Balkaria, requested the president of the republic to take
measures against unknown assailants threatening relatives of
militants, RIA Novosti reports.

Khatazhukov said that unknown assailants threw petrol bombs into the
house of the relatives of a 22-year old militant Astemir Mamishev, who
is on the federal wanted list for murders, including that of the mufti
of Kabardino-Balkaria, Anas Pshikhachev.

The criminals left written threats signed by the "Black Hawks anti-Wahabees".
Khatazhukov said that the attack may have been carried out by
relatives of a the victims of militant attacks. Another explanation is
other forces trying to increase tensions. The human right activist
also handed Kanokov a note containing a request by the militant's
relatives to meet Kanokov personally and discuss ways to settle the
situation.

Kanokov said that he is ready for such a meeting. At the same time, he
urged the authorities to avoid exaggerating the role of ideology in
the militant actions.
