The European Union has proposed uniting the Nabucco and Interconnecter (Turkey-Greece-Italy ITGI)pipeline projects to transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe, Reuters reports.
The EU expects to reduce its dependence on Russian fuel by importing Caspian gas. Europe hopes that Azerbaijan will provide gas using the Nabucco, ITGI or Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) projects.
The European Commission believes that they need to implement the cheaper ITGI project and then extend it to Austria, similar to Nabucco. ITGI is worth $3.4 billion, Nabucco - $10.7 billion.
A source from the Nabucco consortium said that negotiations with ITGI have not yet started, only political discussions are being held.
