US Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg will arrive in Baku
from Tbilisi on February 24, Trend cites the US embassy as saying.
A spokesman for the embassy said that Steinberg will be accompanied by
Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon.
The Armenian media, citing the press-secretary of the Armenian Foreign
Ministry, Tigran Balayan, reported that the US delegation headed by
Steinberg will also visit Armenia on February 23.
High-ranking US officials visited Azerbaijan in summer 2010. The
Pentagon head Robert Gates and the US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton were on a visit to Baku.
Barack Obama appointed Matthew Bryza as the US ambassador to
Azerbaijan in December 2010. The position remained vacant for half a
year.
According to the US Constitution, candidates introduced by the
president need the approval of the Congress Senate. However, the
president may appoint the candidate if the Congress is on holiday.
