Algeria cancels state of emergency imposed 19 years ago

The government of Algeria on Tuesday cancelled the state of emergency imposed 19 years ago, Reuters reports, with reference to the Algerian state news agency.

The Algerian government's decision entered into force immediately after publication of the decree in the official state newspaper.

In January 2011 the opposition party "Union for Culture and Democracy" organized protests in the capital of Algeria. The demonstrators demanded a repeal of the state of emergency imposed in 1992, the release of members of the popular protests, the granting of media freedom and permission to be given for private TV channels.
