Armenian opposition faction “Heritage” leaves parliamentary session

The Armenian opposition faction “Heritage” left the National Assembly on Monday after a speech made by Raffi Ovannisyan, founder of the faction and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, News Armenia reports.

Ovannisyan said that the National Assembly should include talks on the internal and foreign policy of Armenia, including the Armenian-Turkish protocols. The Armenian president recently signed “an anti-constitutional memorandum aimed at early introduction of his candidature at the coming presidential elections,” he said.

The official believes that the coalition is trying to obtain the mandates belonging to the opposition. The faction left the session after the speech.

Three Armenian parties – the Republican Party of Armenia, Prosperous Armenia and Orinats Yerkir signed a coalition declaration on February 17, supporting President Serzh Sargsyan at the elections in 2013.

The head of the faction, Stepan Safaryan, said that the “Heritage” Party will decide on its future moves after 14.00. Raffi Ovannisyan expressed the reasons for the faction’s behavior in a declaration.
Ovannisyan noted that the faction will analyze and talk on the memorandum. He initiated a 20-minute break in proceedings.
