Armenian police accuse opposition of provocation

Armenian police on Thursday made a statement, accusing the deputies of the Armenian Parliament from the opposition Heritage Party of provoking clashes with police, RIA Novosti reports. A fight between street vendors, deputies and police occurred on Thursday in front of the government building in the centre of Yerevan. Street vendors, who for several weeks had been protesting against the decision of the Yerevan municipality to ban street trading, planned to hold a protest in front of the government building.

Along with the traders the action was attended by members of parliament from the opposition Heritage Party Armen Martirosyan, Zaruhi Postanjyan and Anahit Bakhshyan. Police officers detained several of the participants in the action. The protestors demanded that street trading be allowed, as for many of them this is the only way to support their families.
