Sochi discussions on Nagorno-Karabakh run into difficulties

The presidents of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are meeting outside Sochi today to discuss a settlement of the long-running Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, The Voice of Russia reports.

Azeri President Ilkham Aliyev and Armenian President Serge Sargsyan are in Sochi at the invitation of President Dmitry Medvedev.

The trilateral meeting is looking for a solution to the stalemate jointly with the OSCE Minsk Group. No information on progress in the negotiations has yet been released to the press, but it is rumored that the process met certain difficulties concerning the new version of the Madrid principles.

The Russian president confirmed his commitment to the trilateral format of the conflict settlement.

The conflict flared up after Azerbaijan’s Armenian-populated Nagorno-Karabakh region broke away following the 1992 Soviet breakup.
