Iranian Parliament meets to impeach the Energy Minister

The Iranian Parliament (Majlis) has held an open session to review the qualification of the country's Energy Minister Majid Namjou following an impeachment motion submitted by 45 lawmakers citing the minister's “poor record,” Iranian news agency Press TV reports.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad decided to attend the meeting in an effort to speak in defense of Namjou. First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi was also in attendance at the open session.

Eventually Namjou has survived an impeachment effort in the Parliament, securing a vote of confidence. Out of 209 votes cast, 102 lawmakers voted for reinstatement of the energy minister while 101 voted against him and six abstained, the press service of the Majlis has just announced.
