US secretary of defense visits Afghanistan

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has arrived in Afghanistan, Reuters reports.

Gates will meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who spoke out against the death of 9 Afghan children after the NATO air attack in Kunar Province last week.

Karzai said at a session of the Afghan Security Council on Sunday that discussions of the deaths of peaceful citizens by the US military and their rare apologies will not revive the dead.

NATO helicopters attacked a group of children in the Dara-e Pich Gorge on Tuesday. 9 children aged 8-14 died, one was injured.

The press-service of the Department of the Afghan President’s Affairs said that 74 peaceful villagers died, including 40 children, in the period from February 18 to March 1.
