North Ossetia has elected a new mufti, Hajimurat Gatsalov, on March 17, RIA Novosti reports.
Gatsalov has been the acting mufti for the last half year.
His predecessor, Ali-Haji Yevteyev, resigned after a scandalous interview with an internet website. Yevteyev admitted that he had been a radical Muslim in the past and had been heading the Jamaat. Then he said that he was wrongly interpreted.
Russian Muslim leaders condemned Yevteyev. He signed a letter of resignation on May 20.
