LAS says it only requested UN SC protection of civilians

The League of Arab States (LAS) only requested the UN Security Council to protect peaceful civilians in Libya, LAS Secretary General Amr Moussa told a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Cairo, RIA Novosti reports.


The Arab world has been criticizing LAS over the air strikes in Libya, They accuse the organization of permitting the coalition to attack the state.


Moussa said that LAS will not neglect the events in Libya. He added that the Arab world is undergoing changes and there cannot be suppression of protesters.


Moussa is a well-known Egyptian politician. He improved contacts with the revolutionary youth in Cairo, who forced President Hosni Mubarak to resign. Moussa said that he will run for the presidency in Egypt. He is expected to resign as head of LAS in May 2011.
