Armenian police drive out protesters

The Armenian police drove out protesters who had blocked the Armavir-Yerevan highway. They were protesting against the results of mayoral elections in Arkmavir on Sunday, Aykakan Zhamanak paper reports.

The protesters were supporters of one of the candidates for the position, Sevak Minasyan, a son of the prosecutor of Armavir Region. Ruben Khaltachkhyan, the current mayor and member of the Republican Party of Armenia, won the elections with 6850 votes, exceeding Minasyan’s votes by 1,000.

The sides agreed on having a fair competition. However, the police drove out Minasyan’s supporters 2 hours before the polling stations closed.

The paper says that a criminal case has been initiated on falsifying election results.
