EU passes new sanctions against Libya

The EU Council has adopted new sanctions against Libya, RIA Novosti cites an EU spokesman as saying.

He said that they are aimed at enforcing the no-fly zone over Libya and supporting the embargo on arms exports to the country.

The EU Council has also banned Libyan aircraft, which may carry forbidden cargo or armed mercenaries, from flying over EU states.

The sanctions also extend the list of Libyan officials banned from visiting EU states. People involved in violating human rights in Libya and attacking civilians will be punished.

Assets of the National Oil Company of Libya and its five other subsidiaries were frozen.

The sanctions come into force after their publication in the EU paper on March 24.

Ministers of foreign affairs of EU states approved the sanctions at a meeting in Brussels. 11 Libyan officials, including the country’s leader Muammar Gaddafi, and nine organizations, excluding the National Oil Company, were banned from visiting the EU.
