Cyprus settlement negotiations to be renewed

Negotiations on a Cyprus settlement will resume in the last week of
May, RIA Novosti reports, citing the UN secretary-general's special
envoy to the island, Alexander Downer.

Both sides are ready to proceed with negotiations from where they
stopped from May 24th, Downer told a public TV channel.

Negotiations between the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities
were postponed due to presidential elections in the breakaway region
in the north. The ex-president of the self-proclaimed republic and
spokesman for Cypriot Turks, Mehmet Ali Talat, lost to nationalist
Dervish Eroglu.

The new leader insists that he will remain committed to his own way of
solving the problem – the creation of two independent states on
Cyprus. However, this violates UN resolutions.

For his part, the President of Cyprus and the leader of the Greek
Cypriots, Dimitris Christofias, declared that he is ready to restart
negotiations from the very beginning of 2008. Cyprus remains split
between Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot sectors since the military
conflict of 1974.
