Four people killed in Afghan protest

Four people have been killed in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar in the second day of protests against the burning of a Quran by a U.S. pastor, RIA Novosti reports.

It followed a similar demonstration in Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday, in which 14 people were killed.

Gunfire was heard and cars set on fire as hundreds of people attempted to storm a UN mission in Kandahar. Health officials say the dead had been hit by stones and beaten.

The demonstrations follow the burning of a copy of the Quran at a church in the U.S. state of Florida on March 21. It was overseen by Pastor Terry Jones, who was widely condemned last year for plans to burn copies of the Quran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
