President of Karachay-Cherkessia becomes head of region

The People’s Council of Karachay-Cherkessia has introduced amendments to the Constitution, renaming the president as “head of the region”.


The initiative was proposed by the republic’s President Rashid Temrezov. His position will be renamed by 2015.


Russia has 83 regions – 21 republics. There are presidents in Buryatia, Bashkiria, Mariy El, Tatarstan, Udmurtia, Chuvashia, Yakutia, Adygeya, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria. Tuva and Khakasia headed by chairmen of government. Chechnya, Ingushetia, Karelia, Altay Republic, Mordovia, Komi and Kalmykia have heads of republics.
