Contact group on Libya demands Gaddafi's resignation

Members of the contact group on Libya, meeting in the capital of Qatar, Doha, on Wednesday, have demanded Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to resign and announced establishment of a “financial mechanism” to support his opposition, Reuters reports.

French Minister of Foreign Affairs Alain Juppe noted that a cease-fire is only possible if Gaddafi’s forces leave the cities.

The National Counil of Libya, a power structure of the rebels, will be supported by the financial mechanism.

An Italian official said in Doha that the foreign ministers plan to establish a special fund to support Libyan rebels, using Gaddafi’s finances and affiliated structures, which were frozen before the mass protests in Libya started.

It is planned for the Libyan National Council to receive $1.5 billion in exchange for oil.
The contact group consists of a set of European states, the USA and their allies in the Middle East.

A spokesman for the Italian Foreign Ministry, Maurizio Massari, said that the next meeting of the contact group will be held in Italy in early May.

Establishment of the contact group was initiated at an international conference in London in late March.
