Around 5 militant groups operate in Kabardino-Balkaria

Approximately 5 militant groups consisting of 60-70 people are operating in Kabardino-Balkaria. Certain areas of the republic are under a counter-terrorism regime, head of the police department of the North Caucasian Federal District Sergey Chenchik said, RIA Novosti reports.


Unidentified assailants attacked Moscow tourists in Kabardino-Balkaria on February 18. Three people died and two were injured. The counter-terrorism regime was imposed at Elbrus and part of Baksan Districts on February 20. Another regime was introduced in Nalchik, its suburbs and six villages of Cherek District on February 27.


Chenchik said that the situation stabilized but there is no breakthrough yet. He said that 15 militants have been killed and 31 militants and their supporters have been detained since the start of the operation.
