UN Security Council fails to agree on Syria

The UN Security Council failed to reach an agreement on a joint declaration on condemning violence against anti-government protesters in Syria. 15 officials were discussing the document. The Russian representative warned against intervening in Syria, RIA Novosti reports.


The session lasted 2.5 hours. The sides only managed to express their views on the situation.


The UK, Germany, Portugal and France condemned the Syrian authorities. Lebanon, as the only Arab state on the SC, and the rest of countries spoke out against.


Russian deputy representative to the UN Alexander Pankin said that the situation in Syria threatens international security and needs immediate intervention. He insisted that violence in the country is not unilateral. An army convoy was attacked on the Latakia-Tartus road. Army facilities and control posts were attacked, police officers were killed.
