Turkey takes tougher line on Syria's al-Assad

The Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has taken a tougher line on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Al-Assad cannot deny his people’s “indispensable requests for peace and democracy” as unrest continues around the country, Hurriyet Daily News cites the prime minister as saying in an interview in Ankara to American journalists.

Al-Assad should take immediate democratic steps, as the momentum toward democracy in the Middle East is “irreversible,” Erdoğan said.
