Terrorist attack against Turkish PM prevented

Police at Sirnak received a report about a terrorist attack planned against Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the city, Trend reports.


Erdogan was on a visit to the city as part of his re-election campaign.


The police found a bomb under a bridge connecting the cities of Mardin and Sirak. The bomb was equivalent to 36 kg of TNT and was remote controlled. The bomb was defused.


Turkey will hold parliamentary polls on June 12. Erdogan has been in power in Turkey since November 2002. He received 47% of vote at the previous elections in June 2007, forming a single-party government.
