The Georgian non-governmental organization “Public Protector” has published information on arrests of activists of the People’s Assembly two days ahead of their protests.
The “People’s Protector” was preventing illegal actions and supporting citizens on May 21-22. The organization says that 36 people were detained during the monitoring, and their locations are now unknown.
The “Public Protector” sent its officials and lawyers to protect the rights, honor and dignity of detained citizens, gather information on possible illegal actions of the police.
14 people were put under administrative arrest of 1-3 months, six to fines of 400 lari. The fate of others is unknown.
Leader of the People’s Assembly Nino Burjanadze said at the protests at the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) that hundreds were arrested.
Georgian radical opposition has been protesting for three days, demanding resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili. Saakashvili’s former supporter Ex-Defense Minister Irakly Okruashvili, who has been hiding abroad for several years, promised to arrive.
