Georgian lawyers ask president to veto "Freedom Charter"

The famous Georgian NGO “The Georgian Young Lawyers Association” has
asked President Mikhail Saakashvili to veto the "Freedom Charter",
which stipulates employment restrictions on former senior officials of

the Communist Party and Komsomol and intelligence personnel of the

Soviet Union, and also strengthens anti-terrorism measures,
News–Georgia reports.

The "Freedom Charter" was adopted by the parliament of Georgia at the

beginning of last week. It will be a basic document for a special
commission that will examine the registers of persons falling under

lustration, eradicate Communist or Nazi symbols, monuments and street
names that advocate a communist or a fascist ideology.

Young lawyers fear that misinterpretation of the law may facilitate

its use for personal interests and violate human rights.
