The parliament of Abkhazia made a decision to hold early elections for the president of the republic on August 26, due to Sergey Bagapsh’s death, RIA Novosti reports.
The Abkhazian deputies set the date with a solid vote. They also adopted an address to the political forces and population of the country ahead of the coming elections.
Before a new president is elected the vice-president Alexander Ankvab will carry out the duties of the post.
According to the chief editor of Vestnik Kavkaza, Alexey Vlasov, Ankvab is one of the three most obvious candidates for president, RIA Novosti reports.
Other candidates are the Prime Minister of Abkhazia Sergey Shamba and the head of the opposition party “Forum of Peoples’ Union of Abkhazia”, the former Prime Minister and vice-president Raul Khadzhimba.
