Almaty receives status of UN Regional Center

Almaty will receive the status of UN Regional Centre, the Minister of
Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Yerzhan Kazykhanov, announced today at
a meeting with the heads of UN agencies in Kazakhstan, Kazinform
reports.

Kazykhanov said that the new status will facilitate the implementation
of regional projects that serve to strengthen cooperation in Central
Asia, as well as involve other nearby countries and regions in the
process.

The foreign minister said that Kazakhstan is ready to provide active
support in the process of strengthening the regional role of the UN in
Almaty and of developing its projects.
