Russian, Turkish foreign ministries promote fight against transnational crime

The Russian and Turkish foreign ministries will promote a joint fight
against transnational crime, illegal migration and smuggling under an
agreement between the two ministries on cooperation signed in Ankara
within the framework of the Russian president's visit, RIA Novosti
reports.

The agreement replaces a 1992 deal and provides broader contacts in
fighting terrorism, corruption, economic crime, human trafficking,
organized illegal migration, drug crimes, and smuggling.

The ministries will also fight crimes in the sphere of information
technologies, child pornography and the sexual exploitation of
children.

This includes the exchange of information and operational data, the
execution of investigative actions, and joint searches for criminals
and missing people. The ministries will exchange experience and
organize training of staff, seminars and conferences.

The head of the Russian department on countering extremism was invited
to meet with his Turkish partners. Special divisions of the Turkish
Interior Ministry were also invited to annual anti-terrorist drills,
which will take place in Russia's Krasnodar Territory this autumn.

The Russian Interior Minister said that the first agreements on
cooperation and training and retraining of staff have already been
realized. A delegation from the Kazan Law Institute visited the
Turkish Police Academy in March-April this year and agreed on the plan
of delegation exchange and seminars in 2010.

Organized crime, drug, and economic crime issues will be considered by
a Russian-Turkish working group, which will have a session in the
second half of 2010 in Turkey.
