Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stressed the importance of further expansion of relations with Iraq to serve the interests of the Middle East region, Iranian news agency Press TV reports.
"The expansion of relations between Iran and Iraq will be beneficial to regional peace and security," President Ahmadinejad said during a telephone conversation with his Iraqi counterpart Jalal Talabani on Tuesday.
The Iranian chief executive also pointed to historical bonds and cultural commonalties between the Islamic Republic and Iraq and said, "The two countries have great potential to promote bilateral and regional ties.”
