Federation Council ratifies agreement on extension of Russian base presence in Armenia

The Russian Federation Council has ratified the protocol on prolongation of the Russian-Armenian agreement of 1995 on the Russian military base in Gyumri, RIA Novosti reports.

The head of the department for military cooperation between the Defense Ministry and the CIS countries, Andrei Gusev, stated that the Russian military base in Armenia had shifted to a brigade system. At the moment its contingent numbers 4,245 personnel.

Ratification of the agreement will promote future strengthening of military and political cooperation between Russia and Armenia.

The base implements functions of protection of the Russian Federation's interests.
