Turkey home to 12,000 Syrian refugees

The number of refugees in Turkey has reached 12,000. Their number has
increased by 1,500 today. They are stationed at a tent camp at the
Khatay Province. Hollywood star Angelina Jolie visited a camp last
week, RIA Novosti reports.


Disorders in Syria started in mid-March. Opposition and human rights
activists say that over 1,200 people have died in Syria. Syrian
authorities accuse foreign states of supporting armed bandits.


The new EU package of sanctions against Syria has come into force
today. They concern 7 Syrian authorities responsible for violence
against civilians. This includes cousins of the president Zoulhima
Chaliche and Riyad Chaliche. They were banned from visiting the EU,
their accounts were frozen.


The European Union banned export of arms and police equipment to Syria
and visits of Syrian officials to EU, including the president. Their
assets in Europe were frozen.
